Since the hunter wasn’t home when Jacob wandered by his apartment block just after dusk, he decided to drop in for a look. Taking advantage of Saloman’s apparent absence from the city, Basilio and Gabby were out and about, learning about the local vampire population. Basilio was compiling a list of those who were unhappy with Saloman’s regime and might be prepared to do something about it. The friendly Igor was not on that list—unfortunately, since Jacob rather liked him. But he was certainly a font of useful information, and it was eye-opening stuff to the previously isolated American vampires.

The hunter’s apartment was tiny and cluttered. In the bedroom, Jacob found nothing more interesting than a rumpled, unmade bed and a pile of clothes spilling out of a closet. No credit cards or piles of money or jewelry to tempt him. He moved to the living room and stopped in his tracks.

A huge jumble of electronics was piled at one end of the dining table, with larger items underneath. Other bits of wire and various tools littered the other half, with odd items abandoned on chairs and sofas and on the coffee table where the hunter had left his used coffee mug.

Jacob dragged his hand through his hair. How could the hunter do anything in this mess? And more to the point, how the hell was Jacob meant to find what he was looking for?
